Therapy sessions are such an important part of your child’s journey toward growth and progress. As a parent or caregiver, your active involvement and preparation can make all the difference in maximizing the benefits of these sessions. Here are some practical tips to help you collaborate effectively with your Instructor Therapist (IT) and ensure a successful experience.

1. Prepare Your Home Environment

Your home environment can set the tone for a productive therapy session. Here’s how you can prepare:

  • Minimise distractions: Sometimes turning off the TV, reducing background noise, and ensuring other family members are aware of the session to avoid interruptions can be helpful for many children.

  • Create a dedicated space: Set aside a quiet, clutter-free area for the session. Having a consistent spot can help your child associate it with learning and focus. We can learn anywhere but having a special space for sessions can also be beneficial for many children.

  • Gather necessary materials: Have any recommended tools, toys, or reinforcement items readily available. Ask your IT in advance if there’s anything specific you should have on hand.

2. Come Prepared with Questions and Concerns

Your IT is there to support your child and your family, so it’s essential to communicate openly:

  • Make a list: Write down any questions, concerns, or observations you’ve had since the last session. This might include new behaviours, challenges, successes, life events and/or medications.

  • Clarify goals: Use the session to ensure you understand the therapy goals and discuss any adjustments, if needed, with your Behaviour Analyst.

  • Be specific: The more detailed your feedback, the better your Behaviour Analyst can tailor strategies to your child’s needs.

3. Follow the Behaviour Intervention Recommendations from you Behaviour Analyst Between Sessions

Consistency is key in therapy. To reinforce the progress made during sessions:

  • Implement strategies daily: Practice the skills and techniques outlined by your Behaviour Analyst.

  • Track progress: Keep notes on your child’s responses and achievements. This feedback is invaluable for your Behaviour Analyst to assess the program’s effectiveness.

  • Stay patient and persistent: Change takes time, so celebrate small wins and stay committed.

4. Foster Open Communication

Strong collaboration with your Behaviour Analyst hinges on honest and open communication:

  • Share updates: Let your IT and Behaviour Analyst know about any significant changes in your child’s routine, health, or environment that might impact therapy.

  • Seek clarification: Don’t hesitate to ask for explanations if you’re unsure about a technique or recommendation.

  • Be proactive: If you feel something isn’t working, discuss it with your Behaviour Analyst constructively to find alternative solutions.

5. Set Realistic Expectations

Therapy is a journey, not a quick fix. To stay on track:

  • Focus on progress, not perfection: Celebrate every milestone, no matter how small.

  • Be flexible: Understand that adjustments may be needed as your child grows and their needs evolve.

  • Trust the process: Your Behaviour Analyst and your consistent effort will work together to achieve meaningful results.

Your active participation is critical to the success of your child’s therapy sessions. By preparing your home environment, communicating effectively, and staying consistent with the behaviour program, you create a supportive foundation for your child’s growth. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey—your Behaviour Team is your partner in progress.

Together, you can help your child thrive.
